Presidential Debates

Watch the Debates

There were three presidential candidates in 1980: President Jimmy Carter, Democrat; Congressman John Anderson, Independent and Governor Ronald Reagan, Republican.

Only two of the candidates ever debated at one time, however.  President Carter boycotted the first debate because he did not think the independent candidate should be included.  Getting his way, the second debate included only Carter and Reagan.

Footage of the first debate could not be found but in Debating Our Destiny all three candidate reflect on the election.
