Using Information Sources

"People who fail to regard the truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in matters that are great" (Einstein, 1957).

Lynn Student Learning Outcomes that measure this skill include: 

  • SLO IL 100.3 Follow APA style for in-text citations and references page to cite sources and avoid plagiarism

  • SLO IL 100.4 Credit sources verbally and in supporting documents for oral presentations

  • SLO IL 200.2 Use reliable, accurate, authoritative, and timely sources, drawing conclusions from this information 

  • SLO IL 200.3 Cite appropriate sources based on the purpose and audience of a project 

  • SLO IL 200.4 Paraphrase information from sources using APA style for in-text citations and references page

  • SLO IL 300.3 Follow ethical and legal discipline-specific norms surrounding information, including intellectual property, copyright, academic honesty, and/or fair use

Incorporating Quotations: The Quote Sandwich

Description: This lesson teaches a formula, the quote sandwich, as a step to learning to incorporate quotations in papers. Created by San Jose State University. 

Duration: ~50 minutes

Activity: APA Paper Template and Citation Format

Description: Compare the sample expository essay to the Lynn APA paper template to look for typical student errors. This includes a review of the title page format, reference list citations, and in-text citations.

Duration: 20 minutes

 

Activity: Practice Outlining

Description: Short and accessible passages for outlining practice.

Duration: 10-20 minutes

Activity: Plagiarism Quiz

Description: A short (6-question) plagiarism quiz that highlights the main student errors in using APA. This can be done individually or as a group to allow for discussion.

Duration: 5 minutes, longer if there is discussion while taking it.
