Lynn University Library Assistants' Guide

Everything you need to know to be a successful library assistant!

Welcome!

We are so happy you joined our team!

Greetings and welcome to the Lynn Library. We are delighted you’ll be working with our staff to provide high-quality customer service to fellow students, faculty, staff, and guests at Lynn. To achieve this quality, we need to work together as a team, according to the following guidelines.

As a student employee, you are a vital part of the Library. You are providing a very real and important service to the Library, university, and patrons. Student employees do real work, which gives full-time staff more time to perform other duties.

Students understand the needs of their peers and offer insight to full-time staff from the student point of view.

Finally, without the assistance of student employees, we could not maintain the current number of hours that the library is open to the public. We believe the role of the library student worker is essential to the library’s success, which is why we are enumerating our expectations in this guide.

At Lynn Library, it is our goal to provide you with the best work experience possible. We want you to have a fulfilling and productive work experience, and learn skills that will benefit you and your future employers.

Thank you for providing a real and important service to the library!

This guide is designed to walk you through the steps of several areas when working at Lynn Library.

It includes the processes for each of the tasks that Student Workers are asked to do. It also includes pictures and explanations which can be an asset in learning how to do the job well, and it allows you to return to the guide if you have any questions about how to do something.

You are going to make mistakes; it's what you do next that matters most! Please know that if you are acting on behalf of the library user, your supervisor will always back you up. And remember: first impressions are crucial! If a library user has a bad experience, they will never come back. It's all about how you leave them feeling - like they are important, and that we care.

How to use this guide:

There are multiple sections, some with sub-sections, which you need to click on to learn how to do any process. Start with the section below this one: You're Hired! What's Next!

Be sure to click on all the tabs and read the areas within them.

If you have any questions, please contact your supervisor or the librarian on duty. We welcome your questions; we are here to help you.

This guide is always in beta; it gets updated as needed.

Thanks

We are truly grateful to the Warner Library at Eastern University for allowing us to use their Student Worker Training Guide as a template for ours, and to Samantha Thorne at the NCCU School of Law Library for freely giving us her training materials for Springshare's Digby. Their remarkable generosity in sharing information is one of the hallmarks of librarianship.

Thank you to all the libraries that share their resources freely and helped make this guide as accurate and informational as possible, especially Vanderbilt University, Antioch University, Adelphi University, and so many more.
