The Creative Mind Exhibit through March 4th

During February, Lynn Library will be home to a traveling exhibit called The Creative Mind. In this exhibit, you will learn about the great works done by African Americans throughout history. The exhibition shines the light on brilliant minds who contributed to the field of sciences, mathematics, engineering, and medicine. 

One of these brilliant innovators is Warren M. Washington, who pioneered the use of sophisticated computer models to understand and predict climate change. Washington and others like him will have their works shown in the Library until March 4th.

Dr. Valeria Fabi traveled to Peru last semester interviewing victims of forced sterilization and various human rights organization advocating for the population. Now she’s hosting a lecture, discussing her research on the issue. It will be in the held in the Library Event Room on Monday, October 15, 2018, from 12:00 P.M. – 1:30 P.M. Her research focuses on the traditionally marginalized groups who can gain a voice and affect the public persona. With her firm belief that citizens can be empowered and reclaim some of there decision-making power. You can expect this presentation will give a new perspective on how the world is outside your domain.

Huracán Maria: A Year Later

Together the CSI and the Library are teaming up as part of the Change Initiative Week, to bring you Hurricane Maria: A Year Later. Please join us to commemorate the one year anniversary of Hurricane Maria. Hurricane Maria has been one of the worst hurricanes in recent years. It left devastation and distraction in its wake to places like Puerto Rico and The Virgin Islands. It is an Event coming Thursday, September 20, 2018, in the Library Event Room from 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Show some support by coming and listen to some powerful speakers who will be informing you on how natural disasters can permanently impact a community. During the event, there will be a panel to give you an opportunity to hear the emotional and secondhand trauma that the Puerto Ricans and Virgin Islanders - including St. Thomas & St. Croix -  have lived through.

 

 


9/19 - Crafternoons at the Library

Do you have an artistic side? Are you looking to create or crafting with others?

If so, Crafternoons at the Library is the perfect place for you, on Wednesday, September 19, at 3:00 p.m in the Library Event Room. Show your creative side by Creating your original marble dipped mug with your peers and the help of Khyla Bodie. With or without experiences all are welcome. However, there is a limited number of space, so make sure you are one of the first 15 to register. Sweet treats will be served!


9/17 - The Story of the Constitution that You've Never Heard with Dr. Robert Watson

Are you a student who loves history or would like to know little-known facts about the United States of America? Join us on Monday, September 17, 2008, from 12:00 p.m - 1:30 p.m there will be a 4th annual lecture in the Library Event Room. Where everyone's favorite American Studies Professor Dr. Robert Watson will be telling you facts, you may not have known about the Constitution. At the event, they will be giving out free constitution booklets and the chance to sign the Constitution. Most of all, lunch will be served, so come and listen to The Story of the Constitution That You've Never Heard before. 


9/12 - Library Book Club

"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer is this month's selection for the Library Book Club. If you're interested in FREE Starbucks coffee, tea, and books (compliments of the Library), then coming to this month meeting at the Perper Coffee House on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, from 3:00 p.m - 4:00 p.m. During the book club, there will be a discussion about the movie as well as the first chapter of the book. You can pick up your free copy of the book at the Library from Sabine Dantus, ask at the Information Desk. 

                                                                    


9/08 - Language Conversation Cafe

Being new to a school like Lynn University can be exciting, and a little bit nerve-wracking, specifically if English is not your first language. If you're looking for a way to practice your English in a welcoming and friendly environment, then you should visit the Language Conversation Cafe. The Language Conversation Cafe offers anyone who speaks a different language the opportunity to practice everyday English speaking and improve their social conversation skills. If you are interested, there will be a meeting Sunday, September 8, 2018 at the Library Event Room starting at 2:00 p.m - 4:00 p.m. There will be coffee, tea and cookies so feel free to stop by.

                                                         

The Language Conversation Cafe is fairly new to Lynn. Therefore they are looking for volunteers. Anyone who are English, Levantine Arabic, Haitian-Creole and Spanish speakers are accepted. They are also looking for Facilitators who are multilingual and can flow easily between two languages to encourage conversation.


9/07 - Archaeology in Your Backyard Seminar with Dr. April Watson & Dr. Alanna Lecger

On Friday, September 7 at 12 p.m. there will be a seminar about Archaeology. Dr. April Watson will give you an inside look on the fieldwork as well as the tools of the trade. You will learn some interesting facts about what archeologists have found while digging in Florida. Clues to how the early Floridians survived and where they might have lived will be demonstrated.

 

Afterward, Dr. Alanna Lecher will give an in-depth discussion about the upcoming archeology workshop series. In the upcoming workshops, students will be introduced to real artifacts and learn about the standard methods of archeology. Anyone who is interested in the workshop you'll have the opportunity to sign up for it at the end of the seminar.

 


Color Printer

For any students looking to print their projects or assignments in color, Lynn library (specifically the IT department) no longer print in color. The Copy Center in the library is now the Lynn Creative Services located off campus at DMAC. If you have any work that needs to be printed in color, you can come to the library and pick up an ORDER FORM. With the new location, at least a 1 - 2 hours head notice is needed to copy and print (4 - 6 hours for large format). If there's any question or print jobs, you can email ICS@lynn.edu or print@lynn.edu, or call 561-237-9632.

Roots of Wisdom ​Exploring four inspiring stories of environmental and cultural restoration. Roots of Wisdom: Native Knowledge. Shared Science. is a five-year cross-cultural collaboration involving Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Indigenous Education Institute (IEI), Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), and four Native community partners who graciously shared their restoration stories and their voices throughout the exhibitions and the overall project.

  • The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation
  • Tulalip Tribes
  • Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
  • Native Hawaiians

 

 

 

 

 

 

The exhibition is comprised of 18 colorful banners that focus on:

 

  • Saving Streams and Wildlife
  • Restoring Fish Ponds
  • Re-establishing a Native Plant
  • Rediscovering Native Foods

The exhibition is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
