Lynn University Library Assistants' Guide

Everything you need to know to be a successful library assistant!

How to Renew Materials

When a patron would like to renew an item, you will go to the “Assist Patrons” area on the left panel, just as you would to check out. Then scan or type the Lynn ID or name of the patron.

You will then see what items the patron has checked out. On the far right-hand side of the screen, you can see when the items are due as well as how many times the items have been renewed.

In order to renew the items, return back to the left side of the screen, check the boxes beside the name of the item(s) the patron wants to renew, and then click renew.

When NOT to Renew

Sometimes you must not renew items for patrons.

  • When an item is on hold for another patron, do not renew it. You will get a pop-up message like this:

  • Click Acknowledge and let the patron know that the item is on hold for someone else.
  • Offer to place a hold for the patron so that when the item is available, they will be notified.

Interlibrary Loans (ILLs)

  • Never renew Interlibrary Loan items (ILLs)
  • These are items belonging to other libraries and we have to ask for permission first.
  • Whenever you encounter a patron who wants to renew an ILL item, please refer the patron to your supervisor or another librarian.
    • You can share Jared Wellman's email, he handles all the ILLs:
      • jwellman@lynn.edu
  • The way to distinguish an ILL item from an item owned by Lynn Library is in the item record:

  • The Call number is marked as “ILL”
  • The “Enumeration” column is marked with “Interlibrary Loan.”
  • The title is not a hyperlink
  • The title is labeled as a “temporary item.”
