Citing Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools

**You must get permission from your instructor BEFORE you use AI-generated materials.**

This information is based on the Chicago Manual of Style Online Q& A: Citation, Documentation of Sources. This page will be updated as soon as the University of Chicago Press releases new information.

Generative AI

Do not cite generative AI in your reference list. Instead, cite the information in the paper as an in-text citation only: (ChatGPT, January 18, 2024).

Example

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (ChatGPT, September 15, 2023).

Note. If you use a tool that creates a publically available URL for the AI-generated answer, then you must cite the answer in your reference list. See the Chicago Manual of Style Online FAQ for more details.
