Lynn University Library Assistants' Guide

Everything you need to know to be a successful library assistant!

Searching on the Staff Side

Our catalog has two sides; the staff side and the patron side. What the patrons see is the discovery layer and what staff members see is the backend system.

To use the backend system:

In the left panel, click Discover Items.

To search by barcode, scan the barcode or type the barcode number into the “Enter barcode” box.

To search for items by name, type your search term(s) in the text box.

There are various ways to limit your search, making it easier to find what you need.

  • Where the book is located: My Library or Worldwide libraries
  • Search by keyword
  • Search title, author, or ISBN
  • Select language, item type (book, DVD, article) to further narrow the search. You can see all the options circled below.

Searching on the Public Side

Usually, it is easier to use the patron catalog or discovery layer on the Library home page at lynn.edu/library. There is a general search bar, and you can put anything into that - title, author, subject, etc. or any combination, like title and author.

You also have the option of doing an advanced search. An advanced search lets you narrow down your results right from the start. As you can see, there are lots of options here. The little arrows mean those have drop-down menus with even more choices.

Textbooks

Textbooks are shelved in the Textbook Collection behind the Information Desk. They are alphabetical by title, disregarding A, An, or The.

Textbooks get checked out for three hours. This is done automatically, so just glance at your screen to see the time the book is due back.

IMPORTANT: Whenever you check out a textbook, make sure you let the library patron know the time that it is due back!

As it gets closer to closing time, the check out period will adjust automatically so that the latest the textbook will ever be due back is fifteen minutes before we close.

  • If a student checks out a textbook at noon, they get the full three hours.
  • If they check out a textbook at 9:00 pm, it will be due back at 11:45 pm.
  • If they try and check out a textbook at 11:50 pm, it won't go through and they cannot have the textbook.

If a student needs help finding the textbook they need, please direct them to Canvas. All textbooks are listed for each class.
